Sports Medicine Fellowship Program
Accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), the Beacon Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation, Inc. provides a sports medicine Fellowship Program for graduating orthopaedic physicians who choose to specialize in sports medicine.
Program Overview
The one-year program features a curriculum of didactics and a hands on approach to develop a Fellow’s clinical and surgical experience. Fellows work closely with Beacon physicians, athletic trainers, physical therapists, and other clinical and research staff in surroundings conducive to preparing the Fellow for a successful career in orthopaedic sports medicine.
Under the guidance of Fellowship Director, Timothy E. Kremchek, MD, Board Certified and Fellowship Trained Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Surgeon, all Fellows at Beacon will be offered the training and experience needed for a successful and rewarding career in orthopaedic sports medicine. Curriculum includes diagnostic care and surgery, high school/college team coverage in the Greater Cincinnati area including the coordination of care with athletic trainers and physical therapists, and research opportunities. Each Fellow will be designated as a team physician for his/her assigned college and/or high school athletic event(s) during the training year.
As the official medical provider for the Cincinnati Reds, Beacon is able to offer a hands-on experience to Fellows, allowing them to care for professional baseball athletes. Fellows will assist in caring for these athletes during spring training in Goodyear, Arizona, for approximately two months and also during the regular season.
Admission
Beacon accepts three Fellows per year.

Clinical Experience
Beacon Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine has over 20 office locations in the Cincinnati Tri-State area. Fellow(s) will train surgically at three Beacon ambulatory surgery centers: Beacon Summit Woods in Sharonville, Beacon West, and Beacon Evendale in Cincinnati. Beacon Summit and West facilities include out-patient surgery centers, rehabilitation centers, and physical therapy locations all in the same facility as Beacon medical office(s), providing convenience and efficiency for both patients and fellows. The Fellows will work with 10+ orthopedic surgery attendings, providing breadth in types of surgical procedures as well as learning varied techniques for the most common sports medicine surgical procedures. One of the strengths of our program is the training the fellows will receive by working with a group of diversely-trained faculty, with fellowship faculty training from Kerlan-Jobe, Andrews Institute, Hughston clinic, University of Pittsburgh, Steadman-Hawkins, and Boston Shoulder Institute, among others. The fellowship offers an extremely active surgical experience at Beacon ambulatory surgery centers with a balanced exposure to open and closed surgical treatment of the shoulder, elbow, knee, foot/ankle, hand, and hip with an emphasis on open reconstruction of the elbow. The Fellow will also conduct surgery with his/her attending at several major Cincinnati hospitals including UC West Chester Hospital, TriHealth Good Samaritan and Bethesda North Hospitals, and The Christ Hospital.

Professional Athletic Partnerships
Educational Program
The fellowship includes a comprehensive curriculum that hosts a full spectrum of musculoskeletal and medical topics in orthopaedics and sports medicine. Non-surgical and surgical sports medicine topics are reviewed through a series didactic conferences and patient case studies. Each fellow is expected to coordinate multiple presentations and to participate and lead discussion in conferences. Our bi-weekly sports medicine fellowship conferences are broadcast via WebEx through a private web-link provided by Beacon. Most are free of charge and provide CME credit for physicians. Within our surgical bio-skill laboratories, we facilitate education on new techniques, new surgical products and new procedures that speed efficiencies and improve outcomes for orthopaedic patients. The bio-skill laboratory can provide fellows an excellent opportunity for safe practice of more advanced surgical procedures or in-depth exploration of relevant anatomy.
Research Component
Research is a mandatory requirement of the fellowship. At least one research project is considered the minimum expectation of our fellows. Faculty and fellows collaboratively conduct research and fellows are expected to present their findings at a regional or national orthopedic conference, as well as successfully publish in an orthopedic peer-reviewed journal. Faculty support fellows from the beginning with formulating a hypothesis, continuing through literature review, data collection and assimilation, to manuscript composition and ultimately publication/presentation.
