Sports Medicine Fellowship Program
Accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), the Beacon Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation, Inc. provides a sports medicine Fellowship Program for graduating orthopaedic physicians who choose to specialize in sports medicine.
Program Overview
The one-year program features a curriculum of didactics and a hands on approach to develop a Fellow’s clinical and surgical experience. Fellows work closely with Beacon physicians, athletic trainers, physical therapists, and other clinical and research staff in surroundings conducive to preparing the Fellow for a successful career in orthopaedic sports medicine.
Under the guidance of Fellowship Director, Timothy E. Kremchek, MD, Board Certified and Fellowship Trained Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Surgeon, all Fellows at Beacon will be offered the training and experience needed for a successful and rewarding career in orthopaedic sports medicine. Curriculum includes diagnostic care and surgery, high school/college team coverage in the Greater Cincinnati area including the coordination of care with athletic trainers and physical therapists, and research opportunities. Each Fellow will be designated as a team physician for his/her assigned college and/or high school athletic event(s) during the training year.
As the official medical provider for the Cincinnati Reds, Beacon is able to offer a hands-on experience to Fellows, allowing them to care for professional baseball athletes. Fellows will assist in caring for these athletes during spring training in Goodyear, Arizona, for approximately two months and also during the regular season.
Admission
Beacon accepts three Fellows per year.

Clinical Experience
Beacon Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine has 13 locations in the Cincinnati Tri-State area. Fellow(s) will train at two of the main facilities, Beacon Summit Woods in Sharonville and Beacon West in Cincinnati. The sports medicine fellowship is balanced between these two clinical office settings and two ambulatory surgery centers. One of the highlights for our Fellows is the opportunity to gain considerable experience in the two clinics. The two out-patient surgery centers, rehabilitation centers, and physical therapy locations are all in the same facility as both Beacon medical office(s) making for even more convenience during the Fellows’ training. The Fellows will work with 10+ orthopedic surgery attendings and one primary care sports medicine attending. One of the strengths of our program is the training the fellows will receive by working with a group of diversely-trained faculty.
The fellowship offers an extremely active surgical experience at both Beacon ambulatory surgery centers with a balanced exposure to open and closed surgical treatment of the shoulder, elbow, knee, foot/ankle, hand, and hip with an emphasis on open reconstruction of the elbow. The Fellow will also conduct surgery with his/her attending at several major Cincinnati hospitals including UC West Chester Hospital, TriHealth Good Samaritan and Bethesda North Hospitals, and The Christ Hospital.

Educational Program
The fellowship includes a comprehensive curriculum that hosts a full spectrum of musculoskeletal and medical topics in orthopaedics and sports medicine. Through a series of journal clubs, weekly didactic conferences and patient case studies, both non-surgical and surgical sports medicine topics are reviewed. Faculty and fellows conduct research and present their findings along with invited guest speakers who are experts in field of orthopaedics and sports medicine. Each fellow is expected to coordinate multiple presentations and to participate and lead discussion in journal clubs. Within our surgical bio-skill laboratories, we facilitate education on new techniques, new surgical products and new procedures that speed efficiencies and improve outcomes for orthopaedic patients.
Our weekly sports medicine fellowship conferences are broadcast via WebEx through a private web-link provided by Beacon. Most are free of charge and provide CME credit for physicians.
Research Component
Research is a mandatory requirement of the fellowship. At least one research project is considered the minimum expectation of our fellows. Generally, the fellows will have one day per week for research, although there will ample time throughout the week for additional reading and research.
Selection Criteria
Fellows accepted to the orthopaedic sports medicine fellowship program must have completed an ACGME-accredited residency in Orthopaedic Surgery and be a graduate of a medical school in the U.S.A. accredited by the ACGME (or ECFMG equivalent); have or be able to obtain a full unrestricted license to practice medicine in the State of Ohio. Our fellows will be selected for the fellowship through the Sports Medicine Match sponsored by the AOSSM, administered by the San Francisco Match. The academic year is August 1st through July 31st, thus allowing time for the graduating resident to prepare for written board examinations, move and get acclimated to Cincinnati, Ohio.
