Rocking a New Hip
How one tribute rocker’s decision to undergo total hip replacement might be his greatest hit yet.
The show must go on and it was becoming increasingly difficult to do for Dave Moody, lead singer of popular tribute hairband, Hairball. With increasing hip pain, Dave eventually got to the point where he was barely able to walk after Hairball’s physically-demanding concerts. He knew he had to do something.
“Our performance is a physical performance. You have to be athletic to do the job. With my hip pain, I never let the show suffer, but after it, there were times I could barely put one foot in front of the other,” shared Dave. “It was so bad. It affected everything. It affected my sleep. It affected my mood. The pain was brutal.”
Total Hip Replacement
Does hip pain keep you from living your life to the fullest? If so, there is hope. Hip replacement surgery is one of the most successful operations in all of medicine. In fact, more than 450,000 total hip replacements are performed each year in the United States (Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality). A hip replacement combined with recommended post-surgery therapy, you can look forward to returning to everyday activities with improved mobility and strength.
Unable to take the agony anymore, Dave turned to Beacon’s Dr. Kevin Shaw for help.
“The thing that I was nervous about the most was how long would it be for me to recover? I couldn’t take time off. I didn’t want to put the band in a bad situation,” said Dave. “All of that was put out the window when I talked with Dr. Shaw. He told me, ‘You’re in great physical shape. You’re going to be just fine.’ And he was right.”
While surgery time and results vary following a total joint replacement, Dave’s surgery was finished in a couple of hours. He was even walking right after waking up from the procedure. Much of the credit for his immediate improvement, in addition to Dr. Shaw’s expertise, was because of his exceptional physical condition. Confirming the notion that the better health a patient is in, the better recovery they’re likely to experience.
“The people at Beacon are second to none. They care about you and your good health.”
“Coming out of surgery, it was like Dr. Shaw had just removed ten years of pain. The transformation from the moment when I got the surgery to where I am now is night and day,” revealed Dave. “The people at Beacon are second to none. They care about you and your good health.”
