BEACON ORTHOPAEDICS, WALK30 PROMOTING WALKING WITH CINCINNATI NATURE CENTER HOOTS & HOPS EVENT

CINCINNATI – Promoting the tremendous health benefits of walking 30 minutes a day led Beacon Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine to join with Walk 30 to sponsor the Cincinnati Nature Center’s Hoots & Hops event.

The sold-out Hoots & Hops, which is scheduled Friday, Sept. 16, will feature an evening of walkers exploring the Nature Center’s trails while sampling local craft beers, visiting nature knowledge booths and enjoying delicious desserts.

Michael Swank, M.D., a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon at Beacon Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine, has learned from his years in practice that if he could convince people to walk 30 minutes a day, they would be healthier, live better lives and not be in his office.

“The impact of walking 30 minutes a day is truly amazing, and people just don’t fully understand that,” said Dr. Swank, who specializes in hip and knee surgeries. “Walking helps reduce the risks of Alzheimer’s and heart disease. It counters the obesity epidemic and is a tremendous way for post-operative patients to regain mobility.

“I am so excited to be part of the Hoots and Hops event and to encourage people to come out for a beautiful evening and enjoy a health walk while experiencing nature,” he said.

Dr. Swank is so convinced about the benefits of walking that he created the Walk30 program, a physician-backed movement to bring awareness to the benefits of walking 30 minutes a day. In addition to co-sponsoring the event, Walk30 will be raffling off walking sticks during Hoots and Hops to provide walkers with balance on the trails while encouraging a healthy and active lifestyle.

“Hoots and Hops is not a race or about how fast you go,” Dr. Swank said. “It is designed to form a habit of walking 30 minutes a day.”

“Walking communities, walking events and walking sticks help motivate people and help capture their imagination,” he said. “People aren’t sure how to get started. That’s what we are trying to do, because once most people start walking every day, they start feeling better and they don’t want to stop.”
