Shadowing Program

At Beacon Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine, our Shadowing Program offers a selective and immersive experience designed for individuals interested in pursuing a career in healthcare. Due to the nature of our clinical environment and the high volume of interest, participation in this program is by application only, and space is extremely limited. We seek applicants who demonstrate strong motivation, professionalism, and a genuine interest in orthopedics and sports medicine.

This opportunity is open to high school and undergraduate students. Eligible participants must be 18 years or older. Areas of placement include with a physician, physician’s assistant/nurse practitioner, or physical therapist. Shadowing opportunities may consist of a clinical setting as well as one of our surgery centers for observation. While we do our best to accommodate your interests, placements are determined by availability and clinical schedules, and specific assignments cannot be guaranteed.

Application

Below are the months currently available for shadowing opportunities at Beacon Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine. Each month has a separate application form. Students are only permitted to shadow once at Beacon Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine. However, you are welcome to apply for multiple months to increase your chances of being selected. Once a month’s shadowing spots are filled, that month’s form will be closed and unavailable. This is an exclusive opportunity with limited availability, and we receive a high volume of interest each year. Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee placements for all who apply.

Additional Requirement for Surgery Center Shadowing

If you intend to shadow in one of Beacon’s Surgery Centers, you will be required to submit documentation of a tuberculosis (TB) screening in your application. You must complete one of the two options below and upload the appropriate documentation. This requirement only applies to students shadowing in a surgical setting. Students placed in clinics are not required to complete TB testing.

Option 1: Two-Step TB Test (9 day process):

Visit 1, Day 1: The first PPD antigen is applied under the skin.

Visit 2, Day 3: The first test is read by a Physician or Registered Nurse.

Visit 3, Day 7: A second PPD skin test is applied under the skin

Visit 4, Day 9: The second test is read by a Physician or Registered Nurse

Option 2: QuantiFERON (QFT) Test:

This is a blood draw that helps deduct the presence of tuberculosis infections. The test results are usually returned in 5-7 days from the date of the blood draw.
